Community Picture House

The Home of Cinematic Connections
Film is the starting point.
Connection is the purpose.
The Community Picture House is a nonprofit based in East Sussex.
Through Cinematic Connections, we use film to help people — especially those who find social contact difficult — build confidence, communication, understanding and a sense of belonging.
Welcome
At the Community Picture House, we believe film can do more than entertain. A shared story, a familiar scene, or a character people respond to in different ways can offer a safe place to begin. For many people, especially those who experience social anxiety, sensory overload, or difficulty reading social cues, that matters. Film gives people something to talk about before they are asked to talk about themselves. That is where connection begins.
What Cinematic Connections is
Cinematic Connections brings neurodivergent and neurotypical adults together through a shared interest in film. Using screenings, discussion, scene work, and practical collaboration, the project helps participants build communication skills, trust, teamwork and confidence. Over time, those experiences lead into public-facing activity, a festival, and practical resources that can help other groups create more inclusive spaces of their own.
Why film works
Film works because it is both familiar and structured. It offers a common reference point across difference. People can discuss characters, tone, gesture, conflict and emotion without the immediate pressure of direct self-disclosure. Re-enacting scenes can also help people explore body language, turn-taking, tone of voice and teamwork in a way that feels more natural and less exposing than ordinary social practice.
How it works
Stage 1: Foundations
Participants use film as a safe starting point for communication, confidence and understanding.
Stage 2: Collaboration
Participants train together in planning, teamwork and event delivery, applying what they learn through public screenings and shared activity.
Stage 3: Festival and Guides
Participants programme screenings, welcome audiences, lead discussions, and help create online guides on neurodivergence and inclusive spaces.
Who it is for
Cinematic Connections is especially relevant for adults who find social interaction difficult, including many autistic and ADHD adults. It also welcomes neurotypical participants who want to build understanding, develop inclusive practice, and work constructively across difference. The aim is not to separate people into fixed groups, but to help them meet one another more successfully and with greater confidence.
-----
This site is not only a place to find out about the project. It is also where we will share practical guides and strategies drawn from the work itself — from communicating more successfully across difference to making cultural spaces calmer, clearer and more welcoming.
Whether you want to join a session, learn more about neuro-inclusive practice, or explore how film can help people get to know one another, this is where to begin.
