Cinematic Connections

Where cinema becomes community.

Cinematic Connections is an open invitation to share in the simple but profound experience of film. If you are someone who has ever felt cut off, uncertain of how to join in, or simply in need of a place where you can be yourself, this project has been created with you in mind.

Here, films are shown in a calm, sensory-friendly setting. Afterward, there is time and space to talk — not hurried, not pressured — just the chance to share thoughts, listen, and perhaps discover common ground with others who care about the same stories.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in creative activities: re-enacting a favourite scene, helping shape an event, or learning new skills through workshops in communication and confidence. These are not demands, but invitations. You can take part in as much, or as little, as feels right for you.

Above all, Cinematic Connections is about belonging. It is about finding others who understand, and about discovering that through film we can create community, strengthen friendships, and open new possibilities for the future.

When and Where?

Cinematic Connections meets at the Grove Theatre in Eastbourne on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. We know that starting something new can feel daunting, especially if social interaction is difficult, so we keep things calm and informal. To join, you are welcome to meet us for a friendly chat either in person or over Zoom — whichever feels most comfortable for you. There is no pressure, just a chance to talk about what the project involves and ask any questions. The only requirement is that you are 18 or older. From there, you can join us at your own pace, knowing you will be welcomed and supported.

What to expect

When you arrive at the Grove Theatre, you’ll be greeted by one of our team. They’ll show you where everything is — the seating, the quiet space if you need a break, and where refreshments are available. You’ll then settle in for the evening’s film, which is shown in a calm, sensory-friendly way.

After the film, there’s an option to join a relaxed group chat. You can listen, share a thought if you’d like, or simply enjoy the conversation. There’s no pressure to speak — joining in at your own pace is absolutely fine.

The session ends by 9:30pm. You can leave straight after the film, or stay for the discussion if you feel comfortable. Each week, the routine will be the same, so you’ll always know what to expect. Over time, many people find this helps reduce anxiety and makes it easier to connect with others.
